Probate time scales and Improvements

As you can imagine, the Probate Registry’s workload has increased significantly during the past 12 months.

The Probate Registry (HMCTS) currently have capacity to issue a minimum of 6,000 Grants per week and they have advised that it is training two new groups of examiners and issuers which should improve these numbers further.

Current Time Scales

Based on their recent publishing; in terms of time scale (from submission of the application to the issuing of the Grant);

Digital applications take 11 weeks with stops or 4 weeks with no stops (from document upload to grant it’s less than a week).
Paper applications take 16 weeks with stops or just under three weeks with no stops.

Improvements to their Systems

HMCTS have also spent time responding to feedback and improving their online portal including access to the service, various issues within the online application process and improving their communication with HMRC through their sharepoint.
