A day in the life of a Private Client Paralegal’s Dog

Firstly, I would like to take this time to introduce myself, I am Reggie the dog. My human is Toby the Private Client Paralegal based at Curwens LLP Royston office. I am 6 years old, I am 29cm tall, I am fluffy and I am a good boy.

For the past eight months, I have spent much more time with my humans. I don’t know what happened but the humans are not allowed to see their friends any more, this works out well for me as it means that I can go to work with Toby and sleep under his desk.

In the mornings, Toby puts me in the car and we drop the infant human off at childcare, then we drive some more and when we get to Royston we walk around the park and I think about the day ahead of me.

Then we walk to the office, and Toby sits at his desk. He starts reading through emails, he sits there for a while and then eventually goes to the kitchen to get a coffee.

I’ve noticed that since the humans all had to stay away from each other, Toby has been very busy. He tells me that lots of people didn’t realise that they needed to update their Wills and that there are lots of people that need help with understanding what to do when someone dies.

Sometimes when someone dies they need to get a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, Toby helps them with this as it can be confusing.

As Toby is seeing fewer people at the office, when the doorbell rings unexpectedly it sometimes makes me jump but I put on a brave face and I bark really loudly to make sure that everyone knows that someone is at the door, Toby must be happy that I do this because he cheers “Reggie!” whenever I bark.

Toby spends some of the day talking to people on the phone or on a camera, sometimes he picks me up and I can see the people that he is talking to and they can see me. They tell him about themselves and what they want to happen if they die or can’t make decisions any more. It all seems very sad but Toby keeps the conversation light and the people seem quite happy most of the time.

I’m told that I am the office therapy dog although I don’t have any formal training or qualifications; I guess it’s more of an honorary title. Sometimes I go to see Toby’s colleagues and they give me ham and say that I’m a good boy.

At lunchtime Toby takes me to the Royston Heath, I run around and use up some energy that I built up sleeping earlier, Toby just walks but he says that it is a good opportunity to relax and de-stress his mind for the afternoon, I’m not sure what stress is but I guess it’s good that humans get a chance to go outside for fresh air sometimes.

Some days, Toby takes part in marketing events like the Royston Business Network for local businesses, there are lots of other people that do this too and they’re all in Toby’s computer, apparently, they used to meet for breakfast, I like breakfast, especially sausages.

Eventually, after more phone and video calls, and much more of Toby sitting at his computer, it starts getting dark outside and Toby tells me that I’ve been a good boy today and we walk back to the park and then to the car.

We pick up the small human from childcare and go home.

We play together for an hour until it’s time for the small human to go to bed, and then I can sit with my humans, go to sleep and dream about all the fun things I did today.
